If you want to retrieve your deleted Kik messages on Android, you can use two methods. One is to ask the other person in the conversation to forward the messages back to you, and the other is to restore a backup that contains the messages that you want to retrieve.

Are you familiar with the messaging app, Kik?

Maybe you use it to keep in contact with your colleagues or to maintain a connection with your family. Maybe you use it to fool around with your internet friends. Regardless of why and how you use it, your messages on Kik are important in perhaps more ways than one. And accidentally losing your data is always no fun.

If you’re worried about losing your Kik messages, this article is for you. In this article, I’ll show you two methods to recover Kik messages on Android.

Two Methods To Recover Kik Messages

Like WhatsApp, another messaging service, Kik doesn’t store old messages on its servers. Instead, all the chat conversations are saved right on your device whether it’s a phone or PC. While this enhances privacy and security, it also makes the app less convenient to use because of the lack of backup options.

In addition to this, Kik only stores the last 600 messages on your Android device for a maximum of two days. After 48 hours, the app will automatically delete the oldest 400 messages, and keep only the last 200. Again, this is meant to increase privacy, but it does greatly decrease convenience.

However, I’ll discuss the two methods you can use to recover Kik messages.

Recover From History

When you send messages on Kik, two copies of the message are made – one on your device and another on the other party’s device.

Deleting a message from your device doesn’t delete it from the other person’s device. This means that if the deletion happened within the last 48 hours, the most reliable way to retrieve deleted Kik messages is simply by asking the other party.

As long as the message you want to be recovered is still within the 600-message limit and the 48-hour time limit imposed by Kik, the other party can simply scroll through their chat history, find that particular message, and re-send the message to you. They can also take screenshots of the conversation and send you the image.

But while this is the easiest and most reliable method, it’s neither ideal nor always accessible. After all, you’re going to have to ask the other person just to access the message, which could be unappealing or even embarrassing for many.

You’re also limited on which chats you can recover, and you’re on a bit of a deadline before the chats are deleted. In addition to this, if the other person has also already deleted the message, the message is basically lost forever.

Recover From Backup

As mentioned above, there isn’t any way to backup your data within the Kik app itself.

However, you can still recover your Kik chats from backup if you make a general backup of your phone. Most Android phones have backup features built into their phones, and it will generally include app information, such as your Kik chat history.

Backing Up Your Kik Chat History

Before you can recover Kik messages through your backup, you first have to make sure that you have a backup that you can access in the first place.

It will take you about 4 minutes

Here’s an easy way to backup your Kik data through the following procedure.

  1. Go to your phone’s Settings.

    Settings of an Android smartphone

  2. The specific location of this setting will vary by phone brand and model, so to make things easier, simply type Backup and Restore in the search bar and click the correct result.

Search backup and restore inside the settings

  3. Under Local, you’ll see two options. Click Mobile Device.

  4. Your phone will then let you select what kind of data you want to back up. Everything will be checked by default, so if you want to only backup Kik, you have to uncheck everything and go to Apps and Systems Data.

  5. Scroll down to find Kik.

  6. Click Back Up to start the backup process.

  7. Tap Finish when it’s done. You will then have a new backup containing all the information on the apps installed on your phone. It will be saved to your phone’s internal storage.

You can also use a third-party app, such as Wondershare Dr. Fone to create and restore backups of your phone, which requires an entirely different process.

Recovering Kik Messages Through Android Backup

Loading your latest Android backup will include data from your Kik app, which means you can potentially restore lost Kik messages by restoring your last Android backup. To restore an Android backup, follow the steps below.

  1. From the Backup and Restore screen earlier, go to the Restore tab.

  2. You will then be presented with the backups available on your phone. Choose the latest one that includes Apps and Systems Data.

  3. Tap Restore. This will restore your Kik app to the way it was when the backup was created, allowing you to recover the messages.

However, take note that this method is still subject to the “600 words for 48 hours” rule of the app. This means that the only messages you can recover are those that are not more than 600 messages and are not older than two days.

Finally, keep in mind that you can only use Android data recovery if you already have a backup of the app data beforehand.

Future Methods To Restore Deleted Kik Messages

As of this writing, asking another person to scroll through their chat history and restoring an old backup are the only two ways to reliably retrieve deleted Kik messages.

Because of the way Kik’s data-keeping methods work, it is notoriously difficult to recover deleted messages from the app. But there are companies that are currently developing practical solutions for this problem.

Dr. Fone, for example, is an all-around data management solution for mobile devices. It has software modules for phone mobile phone repair, removing phone locks, restoring deleted SMS, and more. It can even restore deleted conversations from other instant messaging platforms, like WhatsApp.

Luckily for Kik users, this app will soon be rolling out a feature that will make it able to restore deleted Kik messages. I don’t know the exact details yet at this point in time, but you can subscribe to their service to try out their other amazing features in the meantime.

Another app with an upcoming feature for Kik is PhoneRescue. It’s also a data management app, with a specialty in restoring deleted and corrupted files from mobile devices. It also allows you to fix bugs and glitches in your device, remove your phone’s lock screen and password, and recover a device’s screen time passcode.

With PhoneRescue, you can save your important information from being lost forever. If you’re still in doubt, check out this in-depth review of the product to see whether you like it or not.

FAQs

Are Kik Messages Deleted Forever?

Since Kik doesn’t store messages on its servers, Kik messages that exceed the 600-message limit and the 48-hour time limit are deleted forever. While there are methods to try and retrieve deleted Kik messages, there’s no way to get back messages that are older than this, as of this writing.

Where Are Kik Pictures Stored?

Photos sent and received on Kik are stored in your gallery. You can view pictures you’ve saved from Kik in your phone’s gallery app under an album likely called Kik. You can also access this through your phone’s file manager or by checking the DCIM folder and other similar folders.

Does Uninstalling Kik Delete Messages?

Uninstalling Kik deletes not just messages but entire conversations. This is because Kik stores your chat history as part of the app data, which means that messages don’t get uploaded to their servers. However, you can always create a backup or coordinate with the other party in the conversation.

Successfully Recover Kik Messages On Android

Without a doubt, losing your Kik chats can be very troublesome. Kik’s enhanced privacy and safety features are the very reasons why recovering deleted messages on the app is much harder than on other similar messaging apps.
