This Halloween, the Mountain View – based company touted its latest safety enhancements to the self driving cars when it comes to interacting with children on the road. The behavior of the children during these special occasions is expected to be erratic and more unpredictable. Thus Google has specially developed algorithms to detect these kind of behaviors. “We teach our cars to drive more cautiously around children” – Google.
Google self driving cars learn to handle kids behavior
People around the world are always terrified about the traffic on the roads especially when it comes to their children. On special occasions like Halloween and Children’s day, the children are expected to dress fancy and hence comes their safety on the roads because there are lot of them wandering and playing. Google is trying to fix this problem.
Halloween’s a great time to get some extra learning done. This week, lots of little ghouls, superheroes and even robots were running around Google with their families, so we asked them to hang out around our parked cars. This gives our sensors and software extra practice at recognizing children in all their unique shapes and sizes, even when they’re in odd costumes.
The company wrote on their Google Self Driving Car Project page.
Google’s Self-Driving Car Project has maintained its security standards since its inception. According to a report by the company, till July 2015, the self-driving car has gone under 23 road accidents, none of which were the fault of the Google’s cars. With Apple and Tesla preparing to launch their autonomous vehicles in 2020, just around when Google is expecting to release its car in the consumer market, the competition is increasing in all of the domains.

The built-from-scratch vehicle by the company called the bubble vehicle navigates with the help of a topographical map and a 360-degree laser view. The company says that the vehicles are ultimately designed to drive without a steering wheel or pedals. But in the testing phase the cars will have a detachable steering wheel and acceleration and braking pedals to be used when the need arises.
Google is constantly working on the project to present more sophistication to its highest standards of security and pattern learning of the traffic. The current testing is being done in the states of California and Texas using the modified Lexus SUV’s and their custom built from ground up prototype bubble vehicle.
With a vision to change the way people drive Google is expecting to successfully launch the vehicle in the market in 2020. With more than 90 percent of the road accidents in the US involving human-error, because of drunk or rash driving, the self-driving car project will decrease these numbers drastically. This also brings opportunities to the blinds and physically impaired section of the society to finally get around without hassle free. To enhance the experience Google is constantly surveying the experience of the people in their cars.
